@Ryuichi Sugiyama of Mitsubishi F. C. was elected Japanese Footballer of the Year for the 1969-1970 season by the football writers' poll. Sugiyama won 52 votes from 92 valid ballots.

Sugiyama, 29 years of age, is known amongst Japanese football supporters as "Golden Legs" because of his fast and brilliant footwork, He contributed much to Mitsubishi's first League Championship victory last season.

This is the second time for him to be awarded the trophy. He previously won the award in the 1964-1965 season, the year of the Tokyo Olympics, when the Japanese team defeated the. Argentinians.
@Three Nations Tourney
@I. F. K. Goteborg of Sweden won the Three Nations' Tournament which was held in Japan in March. Flamengo of Brazil and the Japanese 'A' and 'B' teams took part in the tournament together with I.F.K. Goteborg.

The Japanese 'B' selection was composed mainly of young players in order to look for young talent for the coming Olympic Tournament. Although Flamengo only sent its second string of young players, Mr. Shun Okano, newly appointed Manager of the National Team, was more than satisfied with the fact that the young Japanese eBf players were able to force a draw against a Brazilian professional side.

@Football Writers' Organisation
@The Football Writers' Branch of the Japanese Sports Writers' Organisation now has membership second largest only to that of professional baseball. One hundred and thirty writers have been officially registered to cover football matches for newspapers, radio and television in the Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima and Kyushu areas. The branch? belongs to Tokyo Sports Writers' Club, which is affiliated to AIPS (International Association of Press for Sports).

Before 1960, some sports writers had covered football matches but they did not have their own organisation ?and only held occasional meetings. However, in 1961 a group of enthusiastic football writers planned to establish the "Japanese Footballer of the Year" award and "SOCCER KISHA-KAI"(Football Writersf Club) was founded by writers in Tokyo and Osaka, at which time a system for awarding the trophy was created. Later, writers from the Hiroshima and Kyu-shu areas joined the organisation.
@World Cup Coverage
@Nine Japanese pressmen will be sent to Mexico to cover the World Cup in May and June. This is the first time that Japanese journalists have been registered for the World Cup.
