The success in Mexico

Sports writers predict that this surprising result will boom up the interest of Japanese boys to this sport, but they also pointed out the necessity to find talented younger players for the next Olympic Games to be held in Munich four years from now.

KAMAMOTO
On returning home from Mexico City, Kunishige Kamamoto, the hero of the Olympic Football Tournament, denied the rumour that he would play in a foreign club as a professional. He said at the press interview that he had no intention to turn professional at the present and would continue playing as a member of Japanese national team which consists of pure amature players. But some people still believes that he shall sign a contract with Zaarblucken F.C. of West Germany, maybe next year. Mr. Dettmar Cramer, a former national coach of Japan and now working for FIFA, said to reporters in Mexico City that at least two European and South American clubs had interest to sign a contract with Kamamoto.
Kamamoto, aged 24, is a tall, sharp shooting center forward of Japanese national squad and belongs to Yanmar Diesel F.C. of Osaka. He scored 7 goals out of 9 which scored by the Japanese in Mexico and became the leading goal-getter of the tournaments.
Kunishige Kamamoto was born in Kyoto, the famous ancient city of western Japan, in 1944. In his childhood he had dreamed to travel to many foreign countries. His school teacher suggested him that it is easier to catch a chance to go abroad as a footballer than a baseball player, because football is the world game, so he had determined to be a top class football player. ?At the age of 17, he caught the first chance at last.
He was selected as a member of national youth team which competed in the Asian Youth Tournament held in Bangkok, 1962. Since then he had been abroad 16 times and traveled to many countries in Europe, South America and Asia. He was awarded the trophy of Footballer of the Year, 1966, selected by football writers.
Kamamoto is now one of the most famous sportsmen in Japan. On Nov. 6, he married Miss Sumiko Fukushima with whom he had first met at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. She was working as a German speaking interpreter for the Games at that time. The romance and marriage of them became a headline articles of many magazines and newspapers. |
