Mitsubishi won the League 1973
The Japanese Soccer League closed its1973 season on Dec. 2 and Mitsubishi F.C. of Tokyo has won its second title since 1969. With two games to play, Mitsubishi made the championship safe by going six points ahead of the defending champions Hitachi F.C. of Tokyo.
Mitsubishi also set new league records with14 successive wins and 15 games in succession without a loss. After losing its opening game of the season on July 20, Mitsubishi had its 14 game winning streak until it drew with the Yanmer of Osaka on Nov. 18 when the winner of the League was decided.
Hiroshi Ninomiya, the manager of the Mitsubishi team, demonstrated some new tactics in the substitution of players during the season. In most of the games, he used the ace player Ryuichi Sugiyama as a substitute after half time. Sugiyama, who is the most famous winger in Japan, is still the fastest and the most powerful in the team although he is now 32 years of age. "His physical fitness is rather good and he can play the full 90 minutes. However I thought that it would be more effective to concentrate his sharpness in 45 minutes" Ninomiya explained. "After watching the opponents from the reserve players' seat in the first half, Sugiyama can play with some advantage and, of course, the opposing players are more tired in the second half." In fact the Mitsubishi team often scored the decisive goals in the second half of its games through Sugiyama's contribution.
Mitsubishi is known as a star-packed team in Japanese soccer. Goalkeeper Kenzo Yokoyama and midfielder Takaji Mori were Olympic players in 1964 and 1968 together with Sugiyama, Most of the other players also have international experience. They often lacked coordination last years but this season they were well trained and showed good team work.
Ninomiya's success was largely due to Mr.Hennes Weisweiler and his Borussia Monchengladbach of West Germany. Five years ago, Ninomiya happend to visit Monchengladbach and met Mr. Weisweiler during his European tour. Since then the Mitsubishi F.C. has become a brother team of this famous club, and Ninomiya and his colleagues have visited West Germany every year to study modern football training and tactics.
