 Dettmar Cramer and Japan.
Mr. Dettmar Cramer, FIFA coach from West Germany, was decorated with the Order of the Sacred Treasure by the Japanese Government in recognition of his services to the development of football in Japan.
The decoration was awarded to him by the Minister of Education on September 13thin Tokyo. Mr. Cramer was staying here at the invitation of the Japanese Football Association on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee. On receiving the award, the German coach stated to the Minister that football was not only a sport, but also an education, and it was on this philosophy that he had based his football coaching.
Mr. Cramer made his first visit to Japan eleven years ago, and after spending forty days in the country in November and December of I960 to inspect the National side, he became famous in Japanese sports circles by his use of the word 'YAMATODAMASHII'. Mr. Cramer told newsman that he was disappointed with the Japanese players because of their lack of 'YAMATODAMASHII', a word which he had learnt to mean the soul of the Japanese people'. He wondered where they had lost their traditional SAMURAI spirit, which he considered absolutely necessary to build up a good football team in Japan.
The following spring, Mr. Cramer signed a contract with the Japanese Football Association to become National coach, as part of the Association's preparation for the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.
Thus Mr. Cramer guided our National team to win over Argentina at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, and four years later to get bronze medals and 'Fair-Play' trophies of FIFA and UNESCO at Mexico in 1968.When Mr. Cramer later became a FIFA coach, his suggestion for the further development of Japanese football was to bring up good coaches and establish a firm coaching system. The Japanese Association began to hold four-week coaching schools regularly twice a year as a first step following his suggestion.
In addition to his contribution to football, Mr. Cramer has had a great influence in all Japanese sports circles. The role and importance of professional coaches have come to be recognized in Japan largely because of his efforts. Before he came to Japan, narrow amateurism had dictated most sporting activities, and even those who coached amateur players were required to be amateurs themselves. Mr. Cramer's fine personality, strong leadership and experienced coaching helped to overcome such prejudice against professionalism, and his decoration is a victory for football against the traditional doctrinarism of the Japanese sports world.
